|Description||11th interzonal chess tournament – was held in Riga in 1979 .
The tournament starts on September 4 . The first round began on September 5, the last (17th) – on September 29 . The chief arbiter is Miroslav Filip .
The composition of the participants was finally determined only on the day of the first round. Instead of the sick, Vlastimil Gort and Lubomir Kavalek , Oleg Romanishin and Edmar Mednis took part in the tournament. The Cuban grandmaster R. Hernandez was released from the game in the first round, but for family reasons he never came to Riga. Winners received the right to play in the matches of the applicants .
Mikhail Tal was in the lead from the first to the last day, showing the second result in the history of interzonal tournaments (82.3% of possible points). L. Polugaevsky hesitantly started the tournament, but then was able to get into second place. Having lost in the last round, Z. Ribli allowed himself to be beaten by compatriot A. Adoryan
